Remove two complete laps of tape and discard. Remove an additional
length at a steady (that is, not jerked) rate and cut a piece about 75mm
(3”) long. |
Each cycle of the ReliaPull ensures fresh tape, no need to discard extra
tape. Mechanical removal assures smooth even separation from roll.
ReliaPull provides up to 7” of test tape. |
Must keep track of removing two laps, risk contamination/change to
adhesive, or waste tape. Removing by hand difficult to keep smooth. Tape
rarely cut to length and often much greater than 3”. Tape cut by hand
easily tangles and becomes contaminated by fingers or dust. |

Smooth tape into place by finger in the area of the incision then rub
firmly with the eraser on the end of a pencil. The color under the
transparent tape is a useful indication of when good contact has been
made. |
Specially designed brush counter rotates back across tape, smoothing out
all bubbles, conforming to surface and with consistent pressure every
time. No need to check for color change in tape or find an eraser. |
Operators use a varying range of methods for smoothing tape down,
including the thumb, thumb nail, palm, back of a tool…, but seldom a
pencil eraser, least one of same durometer. Additional efforts to check
color / re-smooth tape affect total time of test and consistency of bond
across test tape. |

Within 90 +/- 30 (or+/-15) seconds of application, remove the tape by
seizing the free end and pulling it off rapidly (not jerked) back upon
itself at as close to an angle of 180º as possible. |
No change to timing, activate test as internal standards dictate. Use of
timer on ReliaPull is helpful to maintain consistency. Tape remains
connected at both ends, no need to pry up free end. Speed controlled by
difference in initial force to start test, lower force to complete test
and gear drive. Lever lowers to assure 180º pull every time, no
variation in XYZ planes. |
The free end of the tape frequently lays flat, causing the operator to
pick at the edge with a finger nail. The rate of removal is frequently
adjusted to suit the desire of the operator and the angle varies widely
in all X, Y and Z planes, changing torque, shear and pull forces. |

Inspect the X-cut area for removal of coating from the substrate or
previous coating and rate the adhesion in accordance with the scale: |
In addition to viewing the substrate the ReliaPull provides a viewing
area for the tape itself. The tape is more often used with the scale due
to its translucency in comparison to inks or paints. |
Tape removed by hand often needs another flat surface of a different
color to get a good comparison. Either the operator must hold the used
tape up by hand or re-stick it to another surface. |

Repeat the test in two other locations on each test panel. For large
structures make sufficient tests to ensure that the adhesion evaluation
is representative of the whole surface. |
By having a longer and consistent length of test tape the ReliaPull
allows the operator to align test strips across a large area to
determine where specific spots or problem areas exist. Defect patterns
are more easily detected this way. |
In some printing, painting or coating operations low spots or unprimed
areas can go undetected. Using small test strips placed at random across
a larger area can allow an operator to miss a problem. |

The tape test is operator intensive… The accuracy and precision depend
largely upon the skill of the operator and the operator’s ability to
perform the test in a consistent manner. Key steps that directly reflect
the importance of operator skill include the angle and rate of tape
removal… |
ReliaPull provides a consistent peel or pull angle every time,
regardless of operator or skill. As well, the consistency of removal
speed has been vastly improved by the mechanisms internal to the
ReliaPull. |
From operator to operator, and from time to time with one operator,
experience has shown that by varying the method of applying the tape,
the removal angle and speed, final results can vary widely across the
scale, even within the same test panel. The results are seldom reliable
and tests often need to be performed repeatedly, wasting time and
resources. |

…Variations in pull rate and peel angle can effect large differences in
test values and must be minimized to assure reproducibility. |
